There are also nine inmates with gunshot wounds who are being treated at the prison clinic.
The prison has a holding capacity for 1 470, according to officer-in-charge, Chief Superintendent Makawa Matipuhwa.
“We have an excess of 435 inmates.
“Harare Central Prison includes Kentucky Prison, holding 100 inmates, who are among the 2005 inmates,” said Chief Supt Matipuhwa.
Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Nobert Mazungunye, visited the prison on a familiarisation tour yesterday accompanied by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Virginia Nyemba.
They also toured the prison clinic and found nine convicted armed robbers being treated for injuries.
Clinic matron, Chief Correctional Officer Thembekile Tshili, said they had enough medicine for inmates.
“We get our medicines, and other necessary tablets, from NatPharm and we have been receiving enough.
“Nine inmates are admitted here for gunshot wounds after they were first attended to at Parirenyatwa Hospital,” she said.
Dep Min Mazungunye also toured the factory and carpentry sections.
One of the convicted murderers, Nengu Shemi, showed the visiting party how to sew prison and police uniforms.
Nengu is in his third-year of a 15-year jail sentence.
Jailed television personality, Oscar Pambuka, helped other inmates by translating Shona to English and vice-versa.
