A Mbare man yesterday appeared in court after he was allegedly caught in possession of a tortoise while looking for potential buyers.
Simbarashe Chikukwa, 25, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye charged with unlawful possession of protected wild animal.
He was remanded in custody to December 30 with advice to apply for bail at the High Court.
The State alleges that on December 15 police detectives received information from their informers to the effect that Chikukwa was looking for potential buyers for a tortoise.
Acting on the tip off, detectives teamed up with Mbare police crack team and went to Marowa Shopping Centre in Mbare.
It is the State case that detectives located three men discussing the tortoise and pounced on them.
They introduced themselves before they asked to carry a search on them.
The court heard Chikukwa was searched and found with a tortoise in his bag and the police detectives asked him to produce documents authorizing him to have the animal and he failed.
Trying to shift blame, Chikukwa told the police that the tortoise belonged to his father and he was not aware that he was carrying the animal in his bag.
He was arrested and the tortoise was taken to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
