. . . Mapeza picks own assistants
FC Platinum were still waiting for official communication from Zifa after Norman Mapeza agreed to take over as Warriors coach on an interim basis.
Mapeza is coming in to replace Zdravko Logarusic who was sacked together with his backroom staff after a string of poor results.
“We know nothing. ZIFA hasn’t told us anything,” said Chido Chizondo, the club’s press and liaison officer.
Although Zifa were also yet to make an announcement, Mapeza’s manager Gibson Mahachi confirmed the development.
“We have agreed and he will be in charge for the next three months. His club had given us the green light and he is coming in because there is a crisis. He has also named his assistants,” Mahachi told ZTN Sport.
Mapeza chose Taurai Mangwiro and Mandla Mpofu as his assistants while Energy Murambadoro is is the goalkeepers’ coach.
He has been given a three-months contract which means he will take charge of the remaining World Cup qualifiers.
Mapeza’s appointment has been received with jubilation by fans who are expecting him to turn around the World Cup qualifiers campaign.
Zimbabwe are bottom of Group G with a point after managing a draw against South Africa and lost to minnows Ethiopia in the other match.
They play Ghana in back-to-back encounters next month before other matches against South Africa and Ethiopia in November.
Mapeza is expected to lead his FC Platinum charges in CAF Champions League second leg tie against GD Sagrada Esperance of Angola at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.
The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in Angola last week.
