A Harare magistrate has convicted MDC-A member of parliament for Harare East, Tendai Biti, for unlawfully announcing presidential election results.

Regional magistrate Gloria Takundwa sentenced Biti to a six-month jail term which was wholly suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years, coupled with a $200 fine.

Failure to pay the fine will result in seven days imprisonment.

The State led by Jonathan Murombedzi, proved its case that on July 31, Biti unlawfully announced that Nelson Chamisa had won the July 2018 harmonised elections yet the election board, ZEC announced the correct results which were in contradiction with Biti’s utterances.
