BREAKING: GOALKEEPER CHIGOVA DIES

Sports Reporter

FORMER Dynamos and Zimbabwe goalkeeper, George Chigova has died.

A product of the Aces Youth Soccer Academy, Chigova was 32.

Chigova, who had been at SuperSport United in the South African Premiership, collapsed and died at his South African home yesterday.

Chigova played 32 games for the Zimbabwe national team between 2011 and 2019

He had been asked to take a break from the game –with everything pointing to an early retirement- at SuperSport United after an incident during the off-season preparations.

He was diagnosed with a heart ailment but after a lengthy lay off he had recently returned to training

Following the pre-season incident, Super Sport United coach Gavin Hunt was quoted as saying:

“…but I know that there is a problem that we are attending to at this point in time and we will know in the next week or so.

“He’s going to spend four weeks just being inactive and go from there. But it doesn’t look positive, but we will give him all our support we can and stay behind him as best we can.”

Chigova was at SuperSport United for a second spell

Chigova played in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League with Gunners FC between 2010 and 2012 when he joined Dynamos until 2014.

From Dynamos he joined SuperSport United and stayed for one season before joining fellow South African Premiership side, Polokwane City between 2015 and 2020.

He then returned to SuperSport United for a second spell until the time of his demise.
