Cape Town City give up on Billiat

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has admitted that his club has attempted to lure Khama Billiat to the Western Cape, but without success so far.

Billiat (33) has been without a club after leaving Kaizer Chiefs upon the expiry of his contract, with his situation upsetting Amakhosi at the time, because he had not responded to the club’s latest offer to extend his deal and left them somewhat in limbo.

The forward has since been without a club, but there had been talk that the Citizens were keen on signing. Latest rumours even suggested that he has already started training with the club, but Comitis denied those.

“No, he is not,” the City boss told Andile Ncube on MetroFM when asked whether Billiat is training with them.

“I [personally] have not had contact with Khama. To be very honest, we were waiting on him to make a decision on his future, where he would like to see himself.

“I think he’s still in the efforts to try and find something in the Middle East, which would be rather lucrative for him. So we’re sitting aside and waiting for his response.”

Comitis also admitted that new City assistant Lebogang Manyama, who played with Billiat at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) and Kaizer Chiefs, had approached Billiat over a potential move.

“Lebo Manyama had the conversation. That is the content of the conversation, yes,” he continued.

When asked whether he’d like to bring one of the most talented players of the PSL era to his team, Comitis responded: “Who wouldn’t [want to have him back]? As long as he is fit to play, who wouldn’t want Billiat in his team?”

Overall, Billiat has made 125 appearances for the Glamour Boys, scoring 24 goals and setting up 29 more. He also featured 144 times for Mamelodi Sundowns, scoring 48 and assisting in 43 goals, while making 92 appearances for Ajax, during which he netted 23 times and set up 24 more.

But the 33-year-old has just featured nine times in 2022/23, with his season disrupted by injuries. – IdiskiTimes
