CHITUNGWIZA-BASED Shamwari Yemwanasikana is empowering teenage mothers through a poultry farming project.
The project will provide the mothers with the necessary resources and support to succeed in the poultry farming industry.
In a statement to the media, Shamwari Yemwanasikana said the project will be implemented in Chitungwiza, with the teen mothers actively involved in all aspects of poultry farming, from rearing the chicks to marketing the products.
“Poultry plays a major role in developing countries, and it has contributed to a shift in the protein diet of many people in Zimbabwe.
“Since chicken meat is the best source of quality protein, vitamins and minerals, and is the cheapest meat of all livestock, this project will be implemented in Chitungwiza by girls and teen mothers from Chitungwiza Dandaro Revasikana.
“The proceeds of this project will be used by teen mothers to pay for school expenses as well as to cover for their basic needs,” the organisation said.
The project requires several materials, including 100 broiler chicks, various feeders and drinkers, starter and grower feed, antibiotics, supplements and other essentials.
