A Chinhoyi Councillor who was, this year, suspended from Council duties after being arrested has had his suspension lifted.

Ward 11 Councillor, Voster Mashevedzanwa (41), who is out on bail pending appeal following his incarceration for assaulting a police officer on duty heaved a sigh of relief after the local government minister July Moyo instructed his immediate reinstatement.

The minister used the powers vested in him by the Urban Councils Act, (Chapter 29;15).

Mashevedzanwa told H-Metro in a telephone interview that Council had received communication from the minister regarding the uplifting of his suspension.

“It is true that I have resumed my council duties.

“The ministerial communication was recently read in council chambers notifying fellow Councillors that I had returned to continue with my duties,” said Mashevedzanwa.

Chinhoyi Mayor Councillor Dyke Makumbi told H-Metro that Council had received communication from the minister pertaining to the lifting of Mashevedzanwa’s suspension.

“Yes it’s true. The letter was read by the Chamber Secretary, Abel Gotora during a council meeting that instructed Council to lift his suspension.”

“We are happy that he has resumed his duties as the finance committee chairperson,” said Makumbi.

The ward 11 Councillor had spent over a month in jail before lodging a successful High Court appeal which was granted.

Mashevedzanwa, together with eight accomplices, Desire Mwarukira, Felix Gonesi, Njabulo Ndlovu, Greythan Nyarukokora, Simbarashe Tapfumanei, Kudzanai Samuel, Melusi Ndlovu and Blessing Nyango were facing two counts of assault.
