Harare City Council over the weekend took advantage of the lockdown and destroyed illegal structures set up by vendors in Mbare.
The structures had become an eyesore as they were everywhere and disturbed the flow of traffic on a normal day Mbare.
The City of Harare has kept its word that it will use the lockdown to restore Harare’s Sunshine City Status.
In an interview yesterday, council spokesperson Michael Chideme they removed makeshift structures on roadsides and those displaced vendors will be moved to designated vending areas.
“Mupedzanhamo remains intact. What has been removed are the makeshift structures on roadsides. On the question of where they are to be moved to, the vendors are to be relocated into the Shawasha space and other established markets which had been abandoned,” said Chideme.
Chideme added that the removal of these illegal structures in Mbare is the first step of the informal sector reorganisation in preparation of an organised post Covid-19 strategy.
“This is council’s first steps of the informal sector reorganisation in preparation for an orderly post Covid19 strategy. City teams begin work on the Shawasha complex today,” said Chideme.
