The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has demolished houses that were illegally built adjacent to Heroes Acre military base.
Reports allege that councillors corruptly allocated land at the cantonment neighbouring Belvedere West suburb.
Director Army Public Relations Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore yesterday told H-Metro that illegal houses had encroached the cantonment zone.
“The houses had been allocated at the army base land and some councillors had corruptly allocated houses.
“We are in liaison with City of Harare and they’re carrying out eviction from the high court order they attained,” he said.
Pictures of houses being destroyed at Belvedere West had gone viral with claims that it was council that was removing illegal structures.
Council spokesperson Michael Chideme dismissed the claims and said evictions are underway in various illegal settlements.
“Council did not remove any illegal structures in Belvedere West this week.
“These are residents occupying land illegally.
“Council has a number of court orders to remove illegal structures.
“We would like to advise all people who were served with eviction orders to voluntarily move off the illegally occupied pieces of land.
“Work was only carried out in Westlea yesterday.”
