A Harare regional magistrate yesterday relaxed former minister of National Housing’s Saviour Kasukuwere’s bail conditions as he intends to seek medical attention in South Africa. The application for the temporary release of passport was made by Kasukuwere’s defense counsel Advocate Thembinkosi Magwaliba before magistrate Hosea Mujaya.
“The defense had placed the State on notice that it intended to make an application for temporary release of passport on January 3, but failed to do so as Kasukuwere lost his mother on New Year’s Eve.
“However, we managed to give the State letters from the physician who is going to do the checkup that the former minister intends to do in South Africa,” said Magwaliba.
The State led by Zivanai Macharaga confirmed that he received the said letters and made an undertaking to verify the authenticity of the said letters, the details of admission and other requirements hence he was not opposed to the application.
The court also granted temporary relaxation of bail reporting conditions as Kasukuwere will not be able to report during the week he is going to be away.
The passport is set to be returned on January 16.
The former minister is facing several charges of abuse of office during his tenure as minister.
