UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe last Friday came out tops over other institutions in a campaign against alcohol abuse.
Participating teams were from Africa University, Midlands State University, Bindura University of Science Education, National University of Science and Technology, Women’s University in Africa, University of Zimbabwe, Harare Institute of Technology, Great Zimbabwe University, Catholic University in Zimbabwe and Solusi University.
The event was hosted by Delta Corporation Limited and held at the Harare International Conference Centre.
UZ walked away with US$2 000, followed by National University of Science and Technology (NUST) who won US$1 500 and lastly Midlands State University (MSU) US$1000.
President of Enactus at UZ, Kudakwashe Mutyavaviri said he was overwhelmed for it was a tough competition.
“I am honoured that our team won this competition because given the effort and input that the rest of the teams were putting, it was indeed stiff but as an institution we are really blessed actually to hold the first position.
“In addition, last year we did not make it in the top three positions so this is very exciting and motivating for me and my team.”
Themed ‘Above the Influence-Campaign against Alcohol Abuse’, the competition was an initiative where students who are part of BOOST clubs ran community projects that relate to promoting responsible alcohol consumption then compete.
Present at the competitions, Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Gerald Gwinji commented Delta’s responsible corporate citizenship and encouraged the students to further on their participation.
“I am pleased with the corporate responsibility that has been shown by Delta whereby they are trying to achieve a world where alcohol consumption is the preserve of adults only and is enjoyed in a responsible manner eliminating all forms of possible harm that is linked to irresponsible alcohol consumption.”
Delta, which manufactures some of the country’s finest cold beverages, has a sustainable development thrust that emphasises that the company exists because the consumers exist.
Its vision is for a sociable world where adults enjoy their products in a responsible manner.
