Afro-jazz crooner Dereck Mpofu will tomorrow cement his romance with fans when he holds a lockdown concert to be streamed live on Facebook.

It starts at 7pm.

The concert, according to the crooner’s camp, is a way to entertain and engage with fans during lockdown in the comfort of their media.

In an interview, the Unonaka singer who has been doing a number of promotions raising awareness on the Covid-19 pandemic, said it was high time artistes embrace social media to reach out to fans.

“I have been doing some commercials during the lockdown period to raise awareness on the Coronavirus.

“I have been working with my business partner Mono Mukundu and I will be jamming alongside him on Friday around 7pm.

“We realised that fans need entertainment during lockdown and it was noble to keep them posted on what we are doing even during lockdown,” he said.

Asked how important social media was during these trying times, he said:

“Things are changing and we have to accept that as artistes and move with times.

“Failure to do so will cost some of our artistes because fans need to be engaged and entertained.

“Lockdown has come as a wake-up call that we need to be innovative or else fans  will easily forget us if we don’t explore opportunities during the extended lockdown period.”

Added Mpofu:

“As artistes we need to embrace social media even after lockdown to ensure that we draw good numbers of fans during live shows.

“In fact, this lockdown period is a trial for us to measure our following and see who are the loyal ones  that we might to keep entertain.”

Besides working with Mono on various projects, Mpofu has also created another good combination with dub-poet Albert Nyathi with whom he has toured overseas with.

Locally, he is getting well along with other artistes and he is on record having said he wanted to move out of the comfort zone he was and hearts of many fans.

Mpofu has opened up that he is willing to work with any artiste as long he has a concept which suits them.

One of the artists to have worked with him is raunchy dancer Beverly Sibanda, comediennes Madam Boss  and  Mai TT among others.
