HARARE City Council has engaged a number of contractors to clear garbage dumps in a move aimed at bringing back glitter in the city.
Council has been failing to collect litter on time because of equipment breakdown and the unavailability of foreign currency to bring in 15 refuse trucks acquired by the city from South Africa.
Residents have also been contributing through wanton disposal of litter and failure to separate at source.
Environment Management Committee chairperson councillor Kudzai Kadzombe said council hopes that when the dumps are cleared it would have fixed some of its refuse compactors which are broken down.
“We hope that once we finish the exercise. We will be able to collect refuse effectively and we are encouraging separation of waste at source and composting at household level.
“A lot of people who have embraced the value of litter are making money through selling garbage and recycling.”
“Residents should also play their part by adopting new ways of waste disposal, so that the dumps will not pile up,” she said.
Kadzombe said they were growing calls by environmentalists to ban urban agriculture on inappropriate places and that resources should be availed to rehabilitate sewage works in all local authorities that pollute the Manyame River, Harare included.
