EDITORIAL COMMENT : Let’s find a solution to rising suicide cases

YESTERDAY, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed three cases of people who committed suicide by hanging themselves.

Over 1 000 people commit suicide every year in Zimbabwe.

This makes suicide a big problem in the country.

Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, around the world, which is one person every 40 seconds.

Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs more often than we care to realise.

Research has also shown that there are indications that for each adult who died by suicide, there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.

Perhaps, this is why a day (September 10) was set to try and acknowledge and prevent suicide in the world.

Termed World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), the day is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.

What drives a man or woman to kill himself or herself?

What makes someone think being dead is better than living a life full of challenges?

Stories of people who commit suicide because of relationship or financial challenges have become too frequent in the media.

Can there be some justification for committing suicide, are there problems or circumstances that are so tough that one can be forgiven for taking his or her life over them?

There are no such problems.

But people, especially those in love, must try and find ways to resolve challenges in their relationships or finances.

Peaceful efforts to try and mend such challenges usually bear fruit.

But, soon after the first talks hit a brick wall, some resort to violence and end up on the police wanted list.

Married people, who resort to suicide, should spare a moment for the people they leave behind, their families, parents and children in particular.

Many today face situations that are unbearable, many feel worthless to the extent of wishing they were dead.

But, more often than not, they survive those ordeals and live lives they never anticipated.

There are many people who contemplated suicide because they had been snubbed by a lover or faced financial challenges.

But, they thought of their families and all the people they love who would be devastated by their death.

They discovered that no man or woman or debt is worth dying for and let time heal their problems.

Committing suicide is basing a permanent decision on a temporary emotion.

It is bad to make such a decision no matter the circumstances.

Issues about stress and depression are often belittled in this part of the world leading to many suicide cases.

People also do not have the confidence to confide in others when they are stressed.

Men are the biggest victims, that is why all three victims confirmed by the ZRP yesterday, were male.
