MARCH is, indeed, a very important month on the global calendar in as far as women’s rights are concerned.
All the women, whether successful or not, are celebrated during this time of the year.
No matter how poor or rich they are, women go through a lot in fending for their families, as well as grooming their children.
Some women have since assumed the role of fathers by providing for the family, as well as protecting their children, from harm.
These roles are being celebrated during Women’s Month.
However, there are some men who deliberately dodge responsibility by not providing for their families.
This has seen some women seeking legal recourse at the civil courts to ensure irresponsible dads are whipped into line.
Unfortunately, some of these men have been offering peanuts, or nothing at all, at the maintenance courts.
This is totally unacceptable as fathers are expected to lead from the front and look after their children.
Women should not carry this burden alone when the fathers are still alive and able-bodied.
Men should complement women by performing their duties, especially but not limited to fending for our children.
In yesterday’s issue of this newspaper, in a story which qualified to be our pick among the articles we published, we carried a touching story of a sane and able-bodied man who offered, at most, UU$2.50 for each of his four children’s upkeep.
Basically, what he was saying was that each of his four kids can survive, for a month, using US$2,50.
What nonsense!
One of the children is now in Form One and this deranged man somehow feels that this kid can do everything which is needed, for a month, using US$2,50.
The man offered US$10 a month, from the US$280 his former wife demanded.
His offer shocked the packed gallery at the court.
The magistrate warned him to take court business seriously by making a sensible offer.
No matter how he might be struggling to make ends meet, this was absurd and a mockery to the justice system and parenthood.
The man demonstrated that he doesn’t care for his children by offering these peanuts.
The children’s needs are so demanding that women need to be complemented by their husbands, especially when they are still alive and able bodied.
Men should also know that fatherhood comes with responsibility.
And, with March being Women’s Month, we should, at least, demonstrate true love by lessening the burden which women carry in raising the family.
Men should not wait for the month of March to demonstrate true love.
Appreciation of women should run in men’s DNA and this should be displayed every day.
Failure by men to complement women has led to some of the mothers succumbing to stress-related deaths.
