ZIM dancehall star, Sylvester “Freeman” Chizanga, was once a drama king and, by his confession, very naughty.
Today, his life has changed so much he rolls in sleek cars, hangs around with big shots and wears expensive labels.
It’s hard to believe he once failed to raise US$1 in three days.
The incident occurred when he was fired from his job in Snake Park where he worked at a butchery.
On November 4, he will launch his 13th album titled Trophy at Alex Sports Club and his 13th album is the story of his life.
. THIEVING FREEMAN
Freeman says he once got himself in trouble after he stole from his employer.
“I had just been promoted at the butchery where I worked and I joined a syndicate of thieving guys.
“Wangu ndakanyudza nguruve three and when it was discovered, I was sent home packing with nothing.
“I was shown the exit door and that’s when I faced real life in Dzivaresekwa.
“I was fired with no savings and you can imagine how it was being fired from my job with nothing.
“In life, you see your real friends when you are in trouble. I saw it when I lost my job.
“I could not raise a dollar, I mean raising US$1, in three days. I realised that life can be tough but God is the one who can raise us from the dust.
“However, I never thought of going back to Bindura because I had come here to Harare to start a life. Going back to Bindura would mean I have failed.”
· MUSIC JOURNEY
“There was a point when I decided to quit music because producers were being hard on me.
“Back then, I was being managed by DJ Staera, who was in love with Lady Squanda.
“He was against the idea of me quitting music. They told me how talented I was and I still link up with him each time I visit Cape Town where he says.
“I have become a music star that I am because of him. I am also evolving because of him. I no longer writes songs in a book but I just visit the studio when I come up with a concept or idea.
“I am that kind of artist who has transformed myself a lot. I now have a live band, which enables me to improvise.”
· NAUGHTY FREEMAN
“When I reflect on school days, I sometimes laugh at things that I used to do.
“I was a day scholar then but I would convince boarders to sneak out of their dormitories to attend jiti sessions in the community.
“I loved to see the way the female dancers were shaking their backs.
“At school, my teachers loved me but they didn’t know I was a naughty boy.
“I was also good in sport and studies.”
