FUNGISAI COMBINES FORCES WITH HWINZA

GOSPEL musician Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave yesterday released a song “Igore Rangu,” featuring dancehall artist Hwinza.

Fungisai has said that over the years she has tried every sound because music is dynamic.

On Saturday, at the Gospel Legends Night she made a unique entrance with a Chimurenga sound.

The songstress said music has always been about blending traditional music and dances into her gospel sound.

She said she managed to embraced change along her musical journey.

“I want to worship God as a Zimbabwean embracing each sound as it comes. I can do a song with a dancehall artist and that is me praising God using a different sound.

“When you are gifted you have a seventh sense that means you will see things before everyone else, vanotanga vachipopota but as time goes on people will adapt.

“The people who were criticising me, we are now together because they have now understood.

“I understand them because maybe at first they thought I was back sliding and joining the world especially with Zimdancehall.”

She added:

“The genre was known for drugs, violence and all that so, maybe, people had thought I was part of that.

“But people failed to understand what I was doing, I package my Jesus everywhere. My Jesus will make noise on any beat and that is just how I feel.

“Some of my songs, if you mute my voice, you can hear Thomas Mapfumo songs on them. That is the sound that I chose at the beginning.

“I said I would package my music on the Chimurenga beat. I said I would be an authentic Zimbabwean and praise God in my authenticity.”
