AS the countdown to the FIH Hockey Junior Women’s World Cup continues, Hockey Association of Zimbabwe are set to host a golf day in October as part of the fundraising efforts for the Under-21 women team’s participation.
The global showpiece is scheduled for November 29 to December 10 in Santiago, Chile.
HAZ, through the Under-21 fundraising committee led by Carla Jones and Collin Allardice, have lined up a golf day on October 1 at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Course. It is part of the fundraising initiatives to source funds for the team’s preparations and participation in Chile. Jones, who is also team manager for the Under-21 side said they are hoping to raise funds to assist with the tour.
“The Under-21 fundraising committee has organised a golf day on 1 October 2023 to assist with the raising of funds required for the tour.
“We hope that funds raised from this event as well as the other planned events will assist us in meeting some of our smaller budget requirements such as final camp training and games as well as some international warm up games,” said Jones.
The team requires a total budget of US$210 000 for the tour, from preparation to participation.
Jones said they have engaged some potential sponsors and are hoping more corporates will come on board.
“Currently, we are still in the negotiation phase with a sponsor and awaiting final contracts to be signed but are still looking for some larger corporate sponsors to come on board.
“As the build-up to the World Cup intensifies, as well as regional and international coverage as the team joins the tournament, then with our social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, our sponsors can expect their brand to be in front of a global audience,” said Jones.
The Under-21 women’s side qualified for the global showpiece during the Junior Africa Cup held in March in Egypt.
