SUSPENDED Zifa technical director Takaendesa Jongwe yesterday said he was not yet in a position to issue a statement on his situation amid indications there is more than what meets the eye.

Jongwe was suspended from his position pending a disciplinary hearing but the association did not give reasons for his suspension.

Although insiders say he was suspended on grounds of insubordination, H-Metro Sport understands the technical director was reason why the ENTIRE Zifa ship was almost wrecked by the alleged match fixing scam last month.

“I’m sorry, at the present moment it is only Mr Gwesela or the chief executive that you can talk to,” said Jongwe.

However, an insider said: “It is believed he (Jongwe) was one of the first to get information from the whistle blowers on the latest alleged match fixing scam that rocked local football.

“But instead of notifying the president (Chiyangwa), he opted to alert the country’s security sector. What then followed was a rush from Zifa in suspending the alleged culprits which have now seen about five officials going through Zifa’s disciplinary process while a board member has been expelled for taking football matters to court.”

Jongwe’s alleged action of sidelining the top leadership on the matter, the source said, is why the president and Jongwe crossed paths.

“In such a scenario, the alleged match fixing scam could have easily implicated all Zifa board members and that was why there was so much hurry in the whole process of investigations to the extent that the expelled board member was not called for the emergency meeting.”

Asked recently on why they had suspended Jongwe, Chiyangwa declined to comment saying he will talk at the right time.

Jongwe added: “I’m not in a position to say anything at the moment and if there is any speculation about my situation, you will still need to engage the same people to explain.

“I’m one guy who is never hostile to the media. But at the moment, I’m sorry I cannot give you a comment on that issue until the right time.”

The association president Chiyangwa has also been on record talking about the “old staff” at Zifa secretariat sabotaging his efforts and questioning their allegiance.
