A HARARE-based lawyer has appeared in court after she allegedly embezzled trust funds amounting to US$32 000.
The money had been put in her custody by a client, who intended to buy a house.
Fiona Machekeche, was not asked to plead when she appeared before Harare magistrate, Barbra Mateko.
The complainant is Paul Gordon Nyagwande.
Allegations are that in 2014, Nyagwande approached Guest and Tanner Real Estate agents, intending to sell his Tynwald house.
He wanted the company to sell the house on his behalf.
Machekeche was the lawyer appointed as the conveyancer and estate administrator.
It is alleged that on October 20 2014, the house was bought by Darlington Maranga, for US$34 000.
An agreement of sale was signed between Maranga and Nyagwande after the latter paid US$2000.
Maranga was instructed by Nyagwande to deposit the money in Machekeche’s account, instead of the estate agent’s account, as was written on the agreement.
Machekeche withdrew the money and converted it to her own use.
Nyagwande engaged another lawyer, Knowledge Chirenje, who assisted him in locating Chekeche, who made an undertaking to pay the money.
However, she never did.
Anesu Chirenje appeared for the State.
