HARARE Mayor, Jacob Mafume has called for a discussion to map a way forward on the sharing of boundaries and development control issues within the Harare Metropolitan Province.

In a meeting with Mayors from Ruwa, Epworth and Chitungwiza, Mafume said these urban settlements share boundaries that are fast encroaching into each other.

He said there were development control issues arising from illegal housing construction along these boundaries.

He feels there is a need to address the issue of congestion, especially from Ruwa and Mabvuku when travelling into Harare, which has complicated the lives of many commuters.

Mafume said there was need to address the financial strain on Harare residents due to the municipalities’ outstanding water bills.

“Our roads feed into each other, leading to significant traffic congestion. It is imperative that we work together to find viable solutions to this issue, particularly from Ruwa and Mabvuku coming into Harare.

“On the outstanding bills, we need to establish a clear understanding of when and how these municipalities can pay their outstanding bills.

“Harare residents are currently bearing the cost of the chemicals required for water treatment.

“Building on the boundaries of our cities by Rural District Councils is unacceptable.

“We need to address this issue promptly and ensure that urban land is reserved for appropriate development,” said Mafume.
