A HARARE man is in arrears of $4500 for the 15 months he defaulted to pay for the upkeep of his children.
This emerged as Tawanda Samu dragged his ex-wife Domingo Samu to the Harare Civil Court seeking a downward variation.
“Your Worship, my ex-husband is in habit of not paying maintenance even if he has the money.
“He is in the habit of letting the amount accumulate and then make an excuse that the sum is too much for him to pay.
“He has not finished paying his arrears in 2016 as the amount was very huge.
“I oppose his application for a downward variation before he has finished paying his arrears,” she said.
In response Tawanda told the court that he was not employed previously therefore could not clear the huge arrears.
“I have not been able to secure employment, Your Worship. I recently got a job I have been paying my arrears.
“In an effort to pay my dues, I also started a security company but it is not operating at the moment.
“The problem is while I am paying my arrears other arrears are accumulating; it is too much for me.
“I could not approach the court before for a downward variation as I was advised to clear the arrears first,” he added.
Presiding magistrate Locadia Marufu dismissed the application
