THE Methodist Church in Greendale lost over US$5 000 to thieves who broke in and stole a cash box that had been locked in an office on Saturday.
The caretaker, Lovemore Gara, had reportedly locked up at 7pm.
He then received a call from the church secretary, Olivia Mandivheyi, the next morning reporting the break-in.
In addition to the cash, the thieves took three laptops.
The cash box contained US$5 379, £5 and R140.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the break-in, saying investigations are underway.
“Police are investigating a case of unlawful entry and theft where a local church lost cash and property worth US$6 679,” said Insp Chakanza.
Insp Chakanza said police are also investigating a theft at MWORS Sports Betting at Machipisa in Highfield that saw TVs worth US$1 200 being stolen on Friday night.
There was also a break-in at Capital Foods which saw US$2 000 being stolen from a safe.
