Tatenda Shinya habours ambitions of taking Ngezi Platinum Queens all the way to glory in the upcoming Premier Netball League (PNL) launch tournament Cup.
The tournament is set for September 25 in Bulawayo and the Mhondoro-Ngezi based giants are one of the big teams expected to take part.
Although he is aware of the mammoth task ahead of him, Shinya is very confident of winning his first silverware with the team.
Netball was last played in March 2020 meaning players have gone for 17 months without touching a ball, a development that can affect their fitness.
“Considering the time, I am not worried about the fitness levels because most of the teams are facing the same challenge. For now we should work on our set plays and getting game time so that we can play the tournament then bit by bit we will work on the fitness after the tournament,” Shinya told H-Metro.
Asked if they can win the tournament, he said:
“Considering the maturity my players have, I have faith and trust in them that they will deliver.”
“This tournament will help me assess my opponents in preparation for the upcoming league games.”
He is, however, wary of Platinum Queens.
“Our main challenge is always Platinum Queens because of the bond and team work they have. Moreover, they were together during the whole lockdown. Definitely their fitness level is way ahead of us so they stand a big chance of winning but I am sure we will do our best to beat them,” he said.
Shinya is well aware of the expectations placed on him by the club and supporters ahead of the new netball season.
“Netball is about results, but you cannot win every game. They both have high expectations from us and it’s going to be hard for the supporters because they really miss seeing the team in action. We will fight this season, and we are aware of the expectations and we will try to make them happy.”
Ngezi is expected to sign a few players to boost their squad. Shinya could however not divulge much on the targeted players.
“We are still negotiating with some of the players but I can’t review the names but for now we are sure of Marian who was with Green Fuel.”
