NGEZI Platinum are pursuing Norman Mapeza to be their next coach in January after parting ways with Erol Akbay yesterday, H-Metro has established.

Akbay was shown the door along with his assistant Tendai Chikuni after failing to meet the target he was given at the beginning of the season.

Ngezi released a statement yesterday saying the separation was by consent.

“Ngezi Platinum Stars FC wishes to announce the departure of Head Coach Erol Akbay and his assistant Tendai Chikuni from the club with immediate effect. The separation is by mutual consent.

“The Board and Management of Ngezi Platinum Stars would like to thank Erol Akbay and Tendai Chikuni for their great contribution to the club for the season to date and we wish them success in their future assignments.

“Ngezi Platinum Stars remains committed to its season 2020 targets and replacements will be announced in due course,” reads the statement.

While the Mhondoro-based side is expected to name the caretaker coach today, they have since stepped up efforts to capture Norman Mapeza.

The club had already approached Mapeza who told them that he is open for negotiations after a three months break from football related matters.

Their other target Kalisto Pasuwa is said to have already agreed a deal with another local club.

“Akbay was dismissed due to poor results. The executive was no longer with his performance, there was inconsistency and their target is the title. It was by mutual agreement and that was part of the contract.

“For the way forward we approached Mapeza but he told the club to come back in January saying he wanted a three months break. Pasuwa was the other target but it appears he is gone. Ngezi is a big club and will go for big coaches. I am quite sure Mapeza will take over in January,” said a source at Baobab.

H-Metro gathered they wanted to appoint Lloyd Mutasa as caretaker coach until the end of the season but later realised that he had already joined TelOne as assistant to Rahman Gumbo.

“The caretaker coach will be announced today. The club is running around to see who is available just to finish of the season. Lloyd Mutasa was considered but it emerged he joined TelOne,” added the source.
