A MAN was found lying on a railway track, with a broken leg in Makwiro on Saturday, while a school girl was injured when a cow, which had been hit by a train, landed on her.
These are just two of incidents, which were recorded in the last five days, which have forced the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) to express concern over the high frequency of accidents involving trains.
Five people were injured in seven separate incidents.
The accidents happened over a four-day period between Saturday and Tuesday. According to NRZ, in the first incident, a man was found on the tracks with a broken leg at Makwiro on Saturday after a train had passed through.
“On Monday, a school girl suffered injuries after a cow, which had been hit by a train in Chingwizi, landed on her while on the Sekope-Gweru block, a man was hurt after also being hit by a train on the same day,” NRZ said.
“Also on Monday, a man sustained serious injuries after being knocked by a train near Odzi.
“In Harare, a train hit a man who was walking along the tracks at the Magaba Flyover in Mbare on Tuesday and two level cross accidents were recorded during the same period.”
The NRZ added that on Saturday, a vehicle was hit by a train at the Umganin level crossing in Bulawayo while in Hwange, a trailer being pulled by a South African registered truck was struck by a train.
“NRZ urges members of the public to pay attention when walking on or crossing the railway tracks,” said NRZ.
“Motorists are also urged to stop at all level crossings and only proceed after establishing that there is no train approaching.”
