ON One Band emerged winners at this year’s Midlands Province Chibuku Road to Fame finals held in Gweru at Msika bar, Mutapa on Saturday.
On one band got the provincial grand price of $500.
They shrugged off competition from Eccosa Rhythms who pocketed $300 for being first runners-up while Mopane pocketed $200 for coming up third.
Speaking to H-Metro, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) programmes officer Honour Muvango said the limited number of participants was due to the fact that many bands were based outside Gweru culminating into having financial difficulties to get to the venue.
“Many bands that are not recorded come from Kwekwe, Gweru does not have competing groups so many of them failed to secure bus fare to the venue,” said Muvango.
The first prize winners expressed their gratitude over their recognised efforts.
“The victory was a relief to us after a long time of trying and practicing,” said Moses Zulu of On One band.
However, other artists from Kwekwe grumbled over the limited number of participants especially considering the fact that the competitions were at Provincial level.
One of the artistes who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity suggested that the competitions should have been held in Kwekwe which had about 30 bands.
“This competition is a true reflection of how NACZ is mismanaging that event and manipulating artistes.”
