The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged the public to desist from using firecrackers tonight as they celebrate New Year, among other practices that disturb peace in communities.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba – in a statement – said the public should also stop acts of blocking roads during the celebrations.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police call upon members of the public to celebrate New Year’s Eve responsibly. Overturning of bins, blocking of roads, use of firecrackers and disturbing of peace in the community is prohibited,” said Snr Ass Comm Charamba.
She also urged parents to monitor their children, particularly girls who are prone to abuse during street celebrations.
“Parents are urged to monitor their children, especially girls as they are often prone to being raped during the celebrations as people normally go into the streets,” she said.
Snr Ass Comm Charamba said they will deploy police officers in all areas and those who break the law will be arrested.
“The ZRP will be deployed in all areas to ensure that peace prevails and the general public celebrate the New Year orderly. Police will not hesitate to apprehend and bring to book individuals who cause disharmony during this period.
“We wish you a peaceful transition into 2019,” she added.
