LONDON. – Jamie Carragher insisted Liverpool will be hugely disappointed not to have beaten Manchester United after leaving Old Trafford with just a point following a 2-2 draw yesterday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated proceedings against their bitter rivals throughout the first half, with Luis Diaz netting from a corner to give them the lead on 23 minutes.
At the interval the visitors had managed 15 shots, with United unable to register even one, but the tide would turn abruptly following the restart.
After seizing upon a poor pass from Jarell Quansah and noticing Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher off his line, Bruno Fernandes lofted a strike from 50 yards to put his side back on level pegging.
Buoyed by their newfound momentum, Erik ten Hag’s side looked transformed after their captain’s equaliser, and shortly after Kobbie Mainoo produced a sublime finish to give them the lead.
United have demonstrated a real difficulty in seeing out advantages in the Premier League of late, and Sunday’s fixture proved no exception as Aaron Wan-Bissaka conceded a penalty that was duly converted by Mo Salah.
However, despite the result keeping the Reds level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table, Carragher insisted his former side will rue failing to finish their opponents off when they had the chance.
“Liverpool only have themselves to blame,” Carragher said post-match on Sky Sports. “They weren’t clinical enough when it really mattered.
“They should have put Man Utd to bed. It’s definitely two points dropped.”
Jamie Redknapp agreed with his fellow pundit’s assessment, and added the disappointment was evident on the faces of the team following the full-time whistle.
“Man Utd will be delighted with a point but Liverpool on the hand, they should have been 3-0 up at half time,” he said.
“They had so many chances. They dominated the match. It’s certainly two points dropped.
“They will be furious because it is a game they had so much control in.
“At the end, they tried to muster something and it would have been a massive three points if they could have got it. But you can see in the faces of the players, they are dejected right now. It’s a game they should have won.” – Mailonline
