FORMER ZIFA president and businesswoman Henrieta Rushwaya was involved in a road traffic accident that claimed one life and injured three people along Bulawayo Road on Wednesday.
The accident involving three vehicles happened between Kwekwe and Gweru at around midnight.
Rushwaya sustained minor injuries while her 35 year-old driver and the other passenger escaped unhurt.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident urging motorists to avoid night driving and always deep their lights when meeting other motorists from the opposite direction.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm a road traffic accident involving three vehicles that claimed one person’s life and injured three others,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
“The accident took place at the 188km peg along Bulawayo Road and Henrietta Rushwaya was among the injured people.
“The vehicle driven by a 35 year-old-man where Rushwaya was a passenger driving towards Kwekwe was reported to have been side swiped by a vehicle from the opposite direction.
“It veered off the road and its front tyre dislodged and landed on the other side of the road while the other vehicle with one passenger also veered off the road and overturned and the driver died on the spot.
“The third vehicle also veered off the road and had no passenger in it,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
He urged motorists to exercise caution and discouraged them from travelling during the night.
“Police are urging motorists to respect other motorists on the road and exercise caution to avoid loss of life and accidents..
“We encourage motorists to deep their lights when approaching other motorists for correct judgments to avoid loss of lives on the roads,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
Meanwhile one of the passengers accompanying Rushwaya told H-Metro that the former ZIFA president suatained bruises and was treated and discharged refusing to identify herself.
“Henrietta sustained minor bruises but is still in shock following the death of the other motorist on spot.
“She is unable to respond to your questions right now but what I can tell you is that she has been treated and discharged,” she added.
