CHORAL music is not new to the Zimbabwean music landscape, with groups like Vabati VaJehovha and Chiedza Chevatendi having pioneered the genre.
After the two outfits’ success stories, more groups came on board, but faltered along the way.
However, Kubatakwashe, which entered the scene 13 years ago, is still standing.

My name is Artwell Marufu, the leader of the 12-piece choral group, Kubatakwashe.
This group was formed around 2009 in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.
It comprises myself, Bernard Chikohomero, Lucky Vhiyanovha, Takudzwa Shumba, Godknows Marufu, Cominet Njunji, Mike Chipiti, Mind Gwata, Isaac Zure, Patrick Bhosha, Bianca Mukocheya and her sister Tasha.
With 13 years in the game, Kubatakwashe has remained intact due to its founder members who provide the roots and foundation.
These founder members comprise myself, Chikohomero, Vhiyanhovha and Gwata.
As a group, we have gelled well despite that we came from various denominations like AFM, Methodist Church in Zimbabwe and ZCC, among others.
As a choral outfit, our vision is to spread the word of God through music.
We are also a unique group in that we are targeting mainly non-believers, who have not yet turned to God.
To ensure we achieve this goal, we have been doing collaborations with the so-called secular musicians so that we win new souls to Christ.
To date, we have released eight albums namely Nyarara Kuchema in the year 2009, Tokumbira Kupenya (2010), Tumirai Mweya Mutsvene in 2012, Gadzirira (2014), Tanyaradzwa (2016), Tiyeni Kumwamba (2018), Tiringe Mambo (2020).
Currently, we are working on a new album at Lyton Ngolomi Studios in the capital.
l BIG BREAKTHROUGH
As a group, we enjoyed phenomenal success after collaborating with Zim dancehall star Tocky Vibes on the song Muzita Rashe in the year 2018.
That success made us realise that our music appealed to Zim dancehall fans.
In other words, we can safely say that it was Tocky Vibes who gave us our biggest breakthrough we needed over the years. Besides Tocky Vibes, we have also collaborated with Baba Harare and Dispatch on the song Takurai Mutoro, Simon Mara, on the track Tiri Kuchema, Kudzie Nyakudya, on the song Ndoda Kuona and Munyaradzi Munodawafa, on this song called Success.
l BEST SHOW
I will forever remember 2018 when we performed at the UDACIZA event s guests called us back on stage.
However, we had a nightmarish trip to Mhondoro last year in December, when we were made to hold an all-night show for a paltry crowd.
Since we were paid, we had to fulfil the contract.
I thank you.
