ASTON VILLA captain Tyrone Mings has backed Zimbabwe international midfielder Marvelous Nakamba after missing a penalty in a shootout which saw the team exiting the Carabao Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday.
Nakamba and Ashley Young missed penalties for Villa to lose 4-3 after the match had ended 1-1 in regulation time.
The Zimbabwean took to Twitter after the match and apologised for missing one of the penalties despite posting a top performance in the match.
“I would like to apologise to all my team mates, coaching staff and most of all the fans who I have let down tonight. Be rest assured that I will learn from this mistake and come back stronger,” said Nakamba.
Mings responded to the tweet supporting the Warriors star with a message that has endorsed by many.
“You have never let anyone down bro,” said Mings.
Another Claret and Blue Ezri Konsa quoted Nakamba’s tweet describing the comment as ‘silly’.
“Don’t be silly bro you was (sic) excellent tonight along with the rest of the team, head up bro we go again Saturday,” said Konsa.
Nakamba was praised for his performance and he got a 7 out 10 in the player ratings by British publication BirminghamLive.
“Covered some serious ground and had to up against Kante in the first half and a refreshed Mount in the second. Nakamba didn’t see too much of the ball but his positional work was spot on as Chelsea were forced to attack down the flanks.
“Tracked back brilliantly to win the ball off Hudson-Odoi with a little over 10 to go. Was brave to step up for a penalty but saw his effort saved by Kepa,” reported BirminghamLive.
A number of fans also leaned in Nakamba’s corner.
“You’ve let no one down. All we ask is that – win or lose – the lads wear the shirt with pride and give it everything.
“This squad does that in abundance. Last night (Wednesday) you were brilliant. It’s been a while since watching Villa has been this exciting. Thanks for being part of it,” @SussexVillan.
“Head up Marv, happens to the best. You were immense during the 90 today, that counts for so much more than one kick of the ball after the whistle,” @rad_nauseam.
“You took a high pressure penalty in front of the home crowd, got it on target and it was saved by a penalty specialist.
“These things happen. Nothing but pride here for you all mate. Hold your heads up and climb that league” said another fan.
“Kante who? We have someone even more Marvelous. You were fantastic tonight; the whole team did everyone proud…. unfortunately, the haters have the loudest voices,” wrote Heena Paul.
