WHAT next for Zimbabwean football?
This was the trending theme on the domestic football front yesterday after FIFA decided to extend the country’s suspension from international football.
An overwhelming 199 members of FIFA voted for the extension of Zimbabwe’s suspension, one year to the month when the country was frozen out of international football, at a similar gathering in Doha, Qatar.
Only one FIFA member, believed to be South Africa, voted against the extension of the suspension.
FIFA said their conditions for the lifting of the suspension, which includes the reinstatement of the suspended ZIFA board led by Felton Kamambo, had not been met.
Sri Lanka were also suspended.
Wild speculation, claiming Zimbabwe was going to be EXPELLED from FIFA, proved to be far-fetched.
However, sources revealed a spirited campaign was launched to try and force FIFA to toughen its stance but the Zurich-based organisation rejected the move.
Gianni Infantino was elected unopposed as FIFA president at the Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
