A Chinhoyi woman and her friend who connived and impersonation police officers before extorting money from the former’s husband have been nabbed.

Lucy Tadiwanashe Mawire, 21, of Cold Stream and Simangaliso Nyasha Makamani, 22, reportedly extorted money from her former husband Tinashe Hakurotwe.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Magret Chitove told H-Metro that the incident happened on June 1 at Chinhoyi Municipality Park.

She said Hakurotwe and Makamani were husband and wife who were on separation.

Insp Chitove said the two were customarily married.

“Makamani contacted Hakurotwe pretending to be a police officer investigating a case of who was going to take custody of their child who is below 18 years.

“However, the three met at Chinhoyi Park and she demanded US$100 to facilitate her to withdraw the charges,” she said.

Chitove said Hakurotwe smelt a rat and alerted the police at Chinhoyi Central police station who set up a trap leading to the arrest of his wife and her friend.

Inspector Chitove strongly warned members of the public to disassociate themselves with police duties as it was an offence.

“Those in marriage must look for amicable solutions to solve their disputes rather than resort to criminal elements.”
