THE Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation and Culture, Emily Jesaya, has urged filmmakers to leverage on the beauty of Zimbabwe to attract international filmmakers and contribute to the growth of the economy.
She said Zimbabwe should showcase its beauty, diversity and richness and called for artists to denounce the drug menace through film.
She was speaking during the officiating of the inaugural ceremony of the Zimbabwe Film Festival Awards (ZAFTAs) aimed to honour film artists.
“I want to emphasise the importance of the film industry and its potential to shape the future of our beloved Zimbabwe.
“Film has a unique power to cultivate, inspire and educate audiences through the stories they tell or film.
“We have the ability to show the beauty, diversity and richness of our nation.
“Zimbabwe is open for film business and will keep inviting regional and international filmmakers to explore the use of our breathtaking landscapes and potential location for their movies.”
She added:
“Let’s leverage these unique assets to attract film makers from around the globe who will not only showcase our stunning locations but also contribute to our local economy.
“In this regard, I want to assure you that the Ministry of Sport, Recreation and Culture is fully committed to facilitating partnerships and collaborations with other countries.
“We are eager to create an environment that encourages co-productions and exchanges of talent and the sharing of expertise.
“Together we can foster an international film community that recognises the tremendous potential talent our nation has to offer.
“Our actors, actresses, directors and technicians have showcased their skills not only within our boundaries but also on international stages.
“I want to encourage all those in the creative industry to spread positive information that will build our nation.”
National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director, Josia Kusena, said:
“We are very cognisant that when we see a multiplicity, and variety of players within the subsector of film, then we are assured of a competitive urge and competitive desire to deliver what’s credible and can be considered for the export market.”
