ZIMBABWE Prison and Correctional Services has started undertaking risk assessment and management, fumigation exercises and response guidelines within its institutions across the country to curb the spreading of Covid-19, a Government official has said.

Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs permanent secretary Virginia Mabhiza said this yesterday at Chikurubi Prison Hospital where she received a consignment of Covid-19 PPEs worth more than US$120 000 on behalf of Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services.

“On behalf of my Ministry, that is the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS), and indeed on my own behalf, allow me to state that we are certainly humbled by the kind gesture that that the ZPCS continues to receive from able and willing partners that includes International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Sunrick Investments,” said Mabhiza.

“Such support is critical given that it is coming at a time when the nation including the ZPCS is seized with the fight to contain the spread of the corona virus (Covid-19) that continues to ravage humanity across the globe.

“It is against this background that both Government and the ZPCS remain appreciative of such level of benevolence especially when being targeted to the disadvantaged groups within our settings that include the inmates.

“We say thank you to the ICRC and especially to the Head of Missions, Cherine Pollini and the whole supporting team for today’s donation which among other items includes an assortment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs),” she said.

Among the donated PPEs included disposable shoe covers of mixed sizes, yellow water proof space suits of different sizes, rain suits of mixed sizes, white knee size gum boots, latex gloves (powder free), large elbow rubber gloves, surgical masks, disposable plastic aprons, theater caps, as well as some alcohol based hand sanitisers, heavy duty refuse bags, bin liners, toilet dip, sodium hypochlorite, chloride of lime HTH, hailers, scrubs, squizzers, hard brooms and mutton cloth.
